From 2 litres to 38 litres of milk per day! – A story of Githunguri

In June 2022, a diaspora based client visited his dairy farm in Kieni East, Nyeri County – Kenya and was shocked by the poor condition of his herd. He remembered about a peer who also lives abroad and has a farm in Bungoma County whom Dairyverse team had worked with in revival of production in his farm. Githunguri (in the attached photo) was part of this program. She had a history of high production but only produced 2 litres of milk per day at the beginning of this program. In addition, she hadn’t shown signs of heat for a period of over 2 years. After the program rollout, her condition improved, came on heat and was inseminated on 10th August 2022. She fortunately conceived.

Gradual improvement in body condition and yields took place and milk yield reached a high of 15 litres per day for the better part of her pregnancy/incalf state. She was dried off at a production of 8 litres per day.

The 10-months journey culminated in delivery to a beautiful heifer on 7th May 2023. Githunguri hit peak milk yield was 38 LITRES PER DAY! Her yields have sustainably remained high and the owner was encouraged to even expand his dairy venture!

  3. I have dairy animals, they are crosses of several dairy breeds, no local. They have Friesian, Ayrshire, Jersey and Guernsey. After one major accident (many were poisoned by ), I lost like 6 cattle in 15 minutes during milking. So I moved the rest away – these were mostly progeny from the dead ones. Since then, performance has been poor, doing 5-8 litres a day. I have thought of selling them off and starting again. I know the feeding has not been good, and the environment if tough (Ugunja Area of SIaya COunty) is very hot. What does dairy verse do and what can we work with? What are the associated cost
